![]() ![]() ![]() Anybody ordering you on how to (or how not to) emulate your games is stupid. They may/will work shit on some games, and some specifics of the game system they emulate, not out of "feature missing" but out of "feature deliberately broken to emulate other more popular games faster". They still work wonders on a subset of games, and if you want a quick play of (insert popular game here), you'll have your fun at 60fps. Zsnes and ePSXe are old emulators, made at times when emulating a game system as a whole wasn't a plan. The higan project was a big part of it, the new idea of a "cycle-accurate" emulator got a lot of momentum, and as always on the internet, things got heated up in two distinct camps: "byuu is a god and we will only swear on accuracy" and "lmao if this dude thinks we will use muuh powerful rig to run old game at 10fps he's wrong" and other name-calling, with few people going in-between and accepting the benefits of both. So emulators became more accurate, up to " I want to do that exact same freeze that happens on a real console". Emulator developers also began to realise that their work was a part of the grand project of game preservation. Because who cares that some "Speedy Gonzales game" isn't working when you can play FFVI to the end? Both Zsnes and ePSXe are relics of that era.Īround 2008, computers got more powerful and as a result, less corners had to be cut, and more stuff could be implemented properly. The focus back then wasn't in "accuracy" but in "get the most famous games working". We had not-powerful computers, so corners were cut a lot, specific behaviours were not implemented, game-specific hacks were added (I think I remember some checkboxes in ePSXe specifically for Valkyrie Profile or FF9). ZSnes and ePSXe started development at a time where we didn't know better. Join us at /r/EmuDev Android Emulator accuracy tests:Īre you an emulator developer?
